Earning an MSW is only the foundation for clinical mental health practice. To become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) authorized for independent practice, graduates must complete a rigorous post-graduate training period, similar to a residency.

This requires accruing 2,000 to 4,000 state-mandated work hours under direct clinical supervision. Distinct from administrative oversight, this is a formalized mentorship with a qualified supervisor focused on refining diagnostic skills, navigating ethical dilemmas, and critiquing treatment plans. Only after completing these supervised hours are social workers eligible to sit for their final clinical board exam to practice independently.
